  4. a very elaborate kind. Many historians of this visual syntax, like

  6. explain how the art of the hand-written manuscript had 
  7. permeated the art of the woodcut and the engraving until, with 
  8. the halftone process, the dots and lines suddenly fell below the 
  9. threshold of normal vision. Syntax, the net of rationality, 
  10. disappeared from the later prints, just as it tended to 
  11. disappear from the telegraph message and from the 
  12. impressionist painting. Finally, in the pointillisme  of Seurat, the 
  13. world suddenly appeared through  the painting. The direction of 
  14. a syntactical point of view from outside onto  the painting 
  15. ended as literary form dwindled into headlines with the
